FEATURE ARTIST
This week our feature artist is Alicia Glenn. Ranging from strong and soulful to soothing and sentimental, Alicia’s voice puts the audience under her spell. With her rhythmic piano playing and lyrics that are straight from the heart, you’ll feel like you’ve been there too. After years of classical and operatic training, Alicia became one half of an electronica duo called nullStatic, singing Bjork, Radiohead and Portishead covers, as well as some creative original tunes. Following two years of performing and recording in Kingston ON, it was time for Alicia to branch out to a new venture of her own. Alicia’s solo material echoes the earlier influences of her life, such as Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk and Faith Evans, and includes touches of Motown ’60s soul. Alicia has opened for Martina Sorbara and Madison Violet, and has performed at venues across Toronto with her former band. She has been in Edmonton since 2006, where she has quickly become a part of the rich music scene, and has played solo shows at The Blue Chair Cafe, Hulbert’s, Bogani Cafe, and the Wunderbar among others. In February 2008 Alicia teamed up with Edmonton’s own “Light Travels”. They have since been gracing the stages at spots like The Haven Social Club, Urban Lounge, The Pawn Shop, Brixx Grill and The Starlite Room, to name a few.
Alicia & Light Travels have an upcoming show at the Starlite Room on December 18th, 2010.

Anyone who has heard Ben Sures perform will tell you that big talent comes in small packages. A veteran of the contemporary folk and roots music scene, Ben has long fought for the recognition he deserves in the Canadian music industry. His 2005 award in the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Competition, for his song Any Precious Girl, is evidence of his genius, his originality, and his tenacious ability to flawlessly pick his way to the top of the guitar heap while telling an absorbing story in words that only the craftiest of lyricists could pen. Raised in Western Canada, Ben began playing guitar in high school, and has been writing and performing ever since, touring festivals, small venues and living rooms across the nation. Ben performs live with his talented bass player/back up vocalist, Shantel Koening, sometimes under the alias Supergroup. Often featured on CBC, Ben’s performances are energetic and humourous, and whatever the venue, he manages to connect with his audiences with a seldom duplicated sense of intimacy that draws the listener inextricably into the folds of his melodic story telling.
Ben has a show coming up on December 2nd at Jeffrey's Cafe. The show starts @ 8pm, and is $15. We featured his song Dancer off of his 2008 release.

It is with great pride and eager anticipation that original indie rock band, AXIOMATIK, present their dynamic sophomore effort, Premeditated Accident, to the rest of the world. Band alumni Shawn Lamble and Greg Kolodychuk are completely stoked to unleash and gig the new album for both their loyal fans as well as for fresh ears. Whereas their acclaimed 2006 debut, Let The Fallout Begin, prominently featured the addition of cello into the rock and roll mix, Premeditated Accident carries on with the ambitious incorporation of unconventional instrumentation. Included on the new collection of recordings are orchestra bells, mellotron, pedal steel guitar, and even a children’s choir. “We’ve really pulled out all the bells and whistles this time. Better songs, better production, better performances… it’s a better record.” This is the consensus for all who have listened to the new album. There’s something on the CD for everyone, whether it be the moody Doors-like feel of “The Alibi,” the funky-rock anthem of “Rob Me Blind,” or the country-punk soup of “One In A Million.”
We featured their song El Bandito off their new release. They have a show opening up for The Boudoirs at Axis Cafe on November 12th. Get your E-TICKETS!

This week we featured Ayla BrookSo, here's the scoop. You may know Ayla Brook as the singer-songwriter for AA Sound System, and their albums as Lily Plain…You’re Hardly Poor and Laissez-Faire. Well, when Marek moved to Victoria, and Lane plotted to move to Toronto (but started a music school instead), it looked Ayla wasn't going to have a band to play in. But Ayla had half a dozen old songs and a handful of fresh ones to clear out of the song closet before restocking it with brand new material and figuring out what to do about new batteries for his sound system. So it was back to the Pine Ridge Farm in Lily Plain, Saskatchewan, with John Blerot engineering and Danny Michel producing (and a couple ladies and a baby to keep everyone sane), to lay the tunes down one warm June week in 2007. No (real) drums were used. Just foot stomps and hand claps in the wooden high-roofed room. Late night rummy gang vocals were added to creaking floor boards and acoustic strums. Everyone recording in the same room - no isolated control room here. The wind sneaking onto the tracks disguised itself as tape hiss along with the clinking of glasses and stray bird songs. After The Morning After is an album about love, about comraderie, about being in the places you belong. From the gentle bounce of “Wake Up Early” to the dreamy soulfulness of “Wonder”, Ayla and friends have created a kitchen party of the heart.
Ayla has a show with Wool on Wolves at the Pawn Shop on November 27th! Get your E-TICKETS!
