This week we featured Ayla BrookSo, here's the scoop. You may know Ayla Brook as the singer-songwriter for AA Sound System, and their albums as Lily Plain…You’re Hardly Poor and Laissez-Faire. Well, when Marek moved to Victoria, and Lane plotted to move to Toronto (but started a music school instead), it looked Ayla wasn't going to have a band to play in. But Ayla had half a dozen old songs and a handful of fresh ones to clear out of the song closet before restocking it with brand new material and figuring out what to do about new batteries for his sound system. So it was back to the Pine Ridge Farm in Lily Plain, Saskatchewan, with John Blerot engineering and Danny Michel producing (and a couple ladies and a baby to keep everyone sane), to lay the tunes down one warm June week in 2007. No (real) drums were used. Just foot stomps and hand claps in the wooden high-roofed room. Late night rummy gang vocals were added to creaking floor boards and acoustic strums. Everyone recording in the same room - no isolated control room here. The wind sneaking onto the tracks disguised itself as tape hiss along with the clinking of glasses and stray bird songs. After The Morning After is an album about love, about comraderie, about being in the places you belong. From the gentle bounce of “Wake Up Early” to the dreamy soulfulness of “Wonder”, Ayla and friends have created a kitchen party of the heart.
Ayla has a show with Wool on Wolves at the Pawn Shop on November 27th! Get your E-TICKETS!

This week we featured F&M! Songwriters Rebecca and Ryan Anderson – Rebecca classically trained; Ryan a veteran of Edmonton’s indie scene – belong to this strain of music-making. The long-married couple is the heart of F&M, an Edmonton-based band that began life, as many bands do, as an entirely different project (in this case, one named after a local funeral parlour). It slowly dawned on Rebecca and Ryan that they were calving like an iceberg from the original band, bobbing in a sea of Their Own Thingness, and F&M was born in 2006, made up of just his guitar, her piano and accordion, and both of their distinctive voices. They have had a number of releases with Shameless records including Let Every Light Shine released in 2007 and Every Light Must Fade in 2008. Their new album Sincerely, F&M releases this November and kicks off with a cross Canada tour starting in BC.
Their Edmonton release date is a multi arts evening with music, two short films, live art and wine pairings! It's at the Haven Social Club on November 12th. There are E-TICKETS available so don't miss out!
*We featured their new songs Lovely, Lovely.

FEATURE ARTIST
This week our feature artist is Manuela! Being half Kenyan and Swiss and having lived on three different continents and in four different countries with multiple self-released EP’s, Manuela is now calling Edmonton, Alberta, Canada home - at least for now. In February 2010 she released her first full-length album “A Different Kind of Fire,” on her own Independent label, Golden Recordings and followed this release with a Western Canadian tour to the 2010 Winter Olympics. Manuela took on the Executive Producer role for this album. Not only was she able to secure private funding but she also oversaw every aspect of it from the music production to the artwork to the manufacturing and distribution. She was even successful in securing valuable sponsorship for her Western Canadian tour from Budget Rentals, and Accent Inn Hotels in British Columbia.
With the support of Alberta Music, Urban Music Association of Canada, CBC Radio, CKUA, CJSR and Ourstage.com, Manuela is broadening her fan base one song at a time. After almost 15,000 plays on Ourstage.com her single “Circling Numbers” was voted on by thousands of listeners and placed Manuela fourth, regionally, in the recent Ourstage.com Lilith Fair Contest, in which Sarah McLachlan and her team reviewed each of the Top twenty ranked entries. Manuela is also emerging out to be one of the top Pop artists on Ourstage.com having spent 30 weeks on the BEST OF POP chart, peaking at number 15 and falling back to as low as number 32. We featured Manuela's song off her The Love EP called Little Suzie.

We'd love to hear from you, so please twitter us, facebook us, or email us at prairiebelles@gmail.com Until next time! xo
