Growing up in Calgary, Alberta, Lauren Busheikin began performing at an early age. She got her start at the age of seven as a member of The Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede. For eleven years, Lauren was singing and dancing in front of thousands of people at the Grandstand Show put on annually at the Calgary Stampede.

At age fourteen, Lauren began taking private singing lessons, focusing on classical and operatic music. She continued to sing classical music but also branched out into more contemporary music during her high school years.

After a year studying science following high school, Lauren realized her true passion was in performance, and was accepted the following year into Grant MacEwan’s music program. She spent the next two years earning a diploma which focused on contemporary performance styles ranging from jazz and latin to rock and pop. During her time at Grant McEwan, she was a member of the MacEwan jazz choir and the Grant MacEwan/UofA jazz band. In May 2006, she sang with the jazz band at the 1800+ capacity Winspear Center for Music, performing during MacEwan’s four convocation ceremonies. After graduating, Lauren took an additional year of studies at the college to focus on composition and songwriting.

After completing her studies, Lauren began performing around Edmonton as a jazz singer. Performing as a trio or quarted, she sings an assortment of jazz, latin, blues, and pop songs in restaurants and clubs as well as private functions.

Now, she very excited to be releasing We Love; her debut album! Lauren met with producer Russell Broom back in July 2010 and started recording in the fall. All the songs are original compositions by Lauren; a cool blend of pop, blues, jazz, and folk styles. Click on the player below to listen to some tracks from her album.

One thing for certain is that Lauren will be making her mark on the Canadian Independant Music scene. She was recognized as a finalist and discretionary prize winner at the 2009 Calgary Folk Fest songwriting contest. In 2010, she received a recording grant from Rawlco Radio to assist in recording her album. Lauren's music and artistry will take her audience by surprise - she is an act you won't want to miss!
Upcoming Shows:
Lauren's CD Release for her new album We Love is Friday, April 22nd, 2011 at the Haven Social Club E-TICKETS

Short of Able – just off of their sold out cd release at the haven social club.
Formed in 2007, Short of Able is a product of the Edmonton indie music scene. Its members fell together through a mutual addiction to live music. Though the band is influenced by many artists, Short of Able has developed its own brand of acoustic folk-pop rock that is less definable than many bands.
The band’s first full-length album titled “Far Away and Out of Sight” is the culmination of over a year of songwriting and recording. Devin Phillips says, “the album was written and recorded simultaneously over the past year. Though we started recording at Norwood Studios, in the fall of 2010 we decided to go completely independent and finish the album ourselves”. The decision to record the remainder of the album was based on the band wishing they could write and record at the same time, without time pressures.
The band also explains that the recording process also involved a lot of feedback from fans. For those seeking something real, “Far Away and Out of Sight” offers up an addictive blend of pop-folk melodies (“Some Said” and “Sunshine”) to head-nodding indie guitar rockers (“Blank Pages” and “Home”) to acoustic jam odysseys (“Instrumental”). Though the album has real diversity, it is definitely stamped with Short of Able’s brand. It is a no excuses offering of the band’s vision for music.
*We featured their song Rains of May.

Martin Kerr "Took us all by storm", said the BBC, introducing 40 million listeners worldwide to his music at the age of just 13. A decade later, his brand new album, "I Know You're Out There" is garnering airplay and critical acclaim around the world. It recently won him the accolade of "Best Provincial Pop Album 2007" from Toronto Exclusive Magazine. The album's first single - Undiscovered Geniuses - was also nominated for "Best Provincial Pop Song". Newspaper reviewers may have noted that, "this british singer-songwriter's music immediately evokes flashbacks to the days of peace, love, and protest songs..." yet the disc and his live performances are peppered with his sardonic sense of humor, for example: "This one's for the Undiscovered Geniuses, or is it genii? I never knew...". Kerr explains of his lead single: "When I was traveling round the world, I found that there were so many incredible people with great talents going completely unnoticed. I developed this bizarre ambition to write world-famous song that discredits the whole idea of stardom. " "I'm hoping it'll get played in supermarkets, and prompt people to talk to each other in the queue, rather than gawking at those awful magazine racks..."
He has already visited 30 countries, including 3 years living in China, where he learned to speak Mandarin, worked as a preschool teacher and recorded 3 albums of songs for children. As an 18-year-old backpacker in China, Kerr met his future-wife, a Canadian. 5 years of traveling and many love-letters later, they settled together in Edmonton. "I've been writing a lot about marriage, which isn't all that common a topic for pop-songs. There seem to be plenty about one-night stands, but not many that have something original to say about staying together forever. So that's the motivation for songs like 'My Love's Been More Than Two Hours Long' and 'Kryptonite Anniversary'." If his latest disc receives the kind of attention it deserves, this British lad may find himself going steady with the North American public. We featured Martin's song "Level with You."

Deon Blyan is an Albertan in the truest sense of the label: he’s got small town roots and ambition that slightly exceeds his geography, flavoured by a newly found and still slightly green urban sophistication. This leads to songs laced equally with frustration and hope built on a solid melodic foundation adopted from John Cougar, Neil Finn and maybe now and again a bit of Squeeze.
The first thing you will notice at a Deon Blyan show is that he’s got a command of vocal range and emotion that instantly draws a crowd. Then you’ll start to notice the hooks. Deon is a pop songwriter and mixes story-based lyrics with well-barbed tunes that you’ll find bouncing around in the back of your head days and weeks after you thought they’d been forgotten.
Deon came to Edmonton in 1994 and started playing drums and guitar with local bands, but rapidly developed a reputation in the community as a pop songwriter and solo performer. Deon's first record, "Simple" was a live acoustic record, but the strong songwriting caught the ear of Edmonton producer Stew Kirkwood (Welcome, Sound Extractor) who brought Deon into his studio to produce "Try To Be Kind”, Deon’s first full length studio recording. Try to Be Kind was picked up by Edmonton indie-star label Shameless Records and crossed North America via the airwaves. On the new record, Lessons(and other things learned), Deon continues to show growth as both a writer and a player, milking more and more out of his vocals and guitar playing. For this second recording Deon teamed up with the pop producing duo James Murdoch and Chris Wynters, allies in the struggle to produce smart and original Canadian pop songs. You’re going to recognize the Blue Rodeo in his rural roots and the Crowded House in his late ‘80s musical education. But you’re also going to get mariachi trumpet, banjo, hammond and a patchwork quilt of audio delights.
Now based in Calgary Alberta, he has been sharing the stage with such talented and notable artist's as Luke Doucet, Danny Michel, Serena Ryder, Mathew Barber, Jill Barber, Dan Mangan, The Wheat Pool, and The Deep Dark Woods winning a loyal fan base and the respect of his peers.
Go check out Deon at Haven Social Club – March 17th, 2011 > MORE INFO
*We featured Deon's song Winnipeg Italy.
